EDITORIAL: Voters can’t dump Bonaventura soon enough

The biggest question heading into Tuesday’s primary: Will John Bonaventura give voters even more reasons to run him and his stooges out of town?

Bonaventura, the Las Vegas constable, is running for the Clark County Commission, in the District G Democratic primary, as revenge for the panel’s vote to abolish his office. He justified that action by turning the fee-supported office that delivers eviction notices and court papers into a minor-league version of the Keystone Kops. Two of his subordinates are running revenge candidacies, too. Office spokesman Lou Toomin is in the commission District E Democratic primary, and dubiously deputized attorney Robert Pool is running against Department 28 District Judge Ron Israel.

Last week, this newspaper obtained a recording of a meeting in which Bonaventura said he dreamed of draining nearly $4 million in office funds and selling the department’s equipment before he’s shut down. Expletives filled the recording.

By the time the constable’s office is closed in January, its reserves might be gone regardless. The county projects about $1 million will remain at the end of June. When Bonaventura took office, the office had a balance of more than $5 million.

Pay attention, primary voters. Don’t allow these dolts to advance to November’s election. Research the candidates on your ballot — or you just might end up with another John Bonaventura wasting your money and bungling your business.
