Fireworks were appropriate ending for 2008
January 5, 2009 - 10:00 pm
To the editor:
The New Year's Eve fireworks were as much of an embarrassment for the city as our lack of them for the turn of the millennium.
We locals could not see them from our homes, and we could barely see them on TV. Even the TV hosts attempted to cover their disappointment.
Shoot them from the hotel rooftops next year or forget them.

Lousy show
To the editor:
The politicians have ruined our New Year's Eve fireworks. None of the displays could reach the heights of the hotels. Nearly a decade of safe, spectacular rooftop fireworks displays were nixed because a sloppy worker caused the Monte Carlo fire. What a shame.

Undeserved pay raise
To the editor:
The automatic annual pay raise for members of Congress should be rescinded this year. In a recession, it is unconscionable, irresponsible and unethical that Congress gets a pay raise when millions of taxpayers have been laid off, companies are going bankrupt, huge numbers of residents are losing their homes to foreclosure and taxpayers are being forced to pay billions of dollars to bail out failing firms.

Right to know
To the editor:
The top executives of Citigroup are declining their bonuses, but our members of Congress will receive an automatic pay raise.
I urge everyone to contact each member of the Nevada delegation and ask whether they are going to accept the raise when their constituents are losing houses and jobs, merchants are struggling and 401(k)s are shrinking.
It is our right to know.

Exemplary service
To the editor:
Whether you agree with the war in Iraq or not, Wednesday's story of two young Marines standing fast and not deserting their post -- while the Iraqis fled -- speaks well for our troops and makes me proud to be an American.
