How can firefighter live on such a pittance?
October 5, 2009 - 9:00 pm
To the editor:
Oh, the humanity! Retired firefighter Charles Pulsipher sued after his retirement benefit was reduced from $11,004.50 to $9,841.63 per month (Wednesday Review-Journal). With the reduced amount of more than $118,000 per year, plus his "Cadillac" health insurance plan, we are talking about serious taxpayer money for his early retirement.
Until we citizens demand transparent government union contract negotiations, our paid-for politicians and compliant bureaucrats will continue these obscene taxpayer giveaways.
Better yet, get rid of the corruption of government union money and union members stacking of our Legislature by banning government unions entirely. That's probably impossible, considering our power structure's ongoing refusal to simply enforce the state constitution's clear prohibition of executive branch employees serving in the Legislature.

Social order
To the editor:
The elimination of the death tax would be the worst thing for all Americans and the rest of humanity (Review-Journal, Thursday editorial). It would lead to an inherited aristocracy and that would lead to revolution.
My children have no right to receive my money. If my child inherits $10 million, that would give him a competitive edge over a better equipped child from the ghetto. The ghetto child could not compete on a level playing field, and the ghetto child must become a revolutionary and that would destroy the social order.

Shut up and pay
To the editor:
I just love the way conservatives like naming things so people will automatically feel emotionally compelled to favor or dislike what has been named. Thursday in a Review-Journal editorial, I see that we should all be against the "death tax."
It seems the dreaded death tax will tax estates valued at more than $7 million. So if you are rich enough to have a $7 million estate, the government is going to take a chunk of it.
It's not a "death tax," it's a dynasty tax. So, if the government is going to tax the corpse of your rich relative only if he leaves you more than $7 million, then shut up and pay your dynasty tax.
