Court rules against Wynn tip policy
To the editor:
After reading Friday's article by Chris Sieroty, which reported that Clark County District Judge Kenneth Cory ruled that employers (Wynn Resorts) can't force workers to share tips with supervisors or other employees, I smiled and thought: Finally, some middle-class workers are getting a fair shake.
Wynn Resorts officials say they will appeal because they believe they gained no direct benefit by using tips to increase supervisor compensation. What a lie.
I used to be a dealer, and then a supervisor, and everyone in the industry knows that dealers at the big properties make more than their supervisors. So it is very difficult to persuade dealers to move into supervisory positions. By stealing tips and using them to compensate supervisors, Mr. Wynn is directly benefiting because he has happy supervisors and, of course, it doesn't cost his company any money.
Mr. Wynn should adjust the salary schedule for his supervisors and pay them more than dealers. But a bully never promotes a positive and fair relationship. I hope the Nevada Supreme Court will get the case and rule for the dealers.
