LETTERS: Fiore and Trump make quite a pair
November 5, 2015 - 5:49 pm
Mr. Trump may be a great dealmaker with other business people who are equally loutish or at least willing to put up with his lack of tact, but can he really be considered presidential and represent the powerful United States when meeting with world leaders who have impulse control, manners, cleverness and diplomacy skills? He doesn't even know who the various terrorists are who threaten our country. Who is Hezbollah? Hamas?
And now we have Assemblywoman Fiore, who has no impulse control, manners or diplomacy and represents the dark ages of the Wild, Wild West — and even then, I haven't heard of a female leader so lacking in leadership skills and respectability.
Can't someone just end this nightmare and put our dignity as a nation back in the decision-making equation?

War crimes
I could not help but note the irony as I read through the article about the bombing of an Afghan hospital ("Obama apologizes for attack; MSF demands independent probe," Oct. 8 Review-Journal). The story deals with the apparent mistaken bombing of the hospital by U.S. forces and the subsequent outcry from Doctors Without Borders and various international organizations demanding possible "war crimes" prosecution.
In that same day, there was a full-page article describing Russia's use of cluster bombs dropped on towns and killing scores of unarmed civilians ("Russia backs Syrians in assault on insurgents"). I read further, but for the life of me, I could not find the emotional outcry from the United Nations or any humanitarian organizations demanding an apology from Russian President Vladimir Putin, or a threat of war crimes prosecution.

Abortion rights
Abortion is always tragic, no matter the reason. Women should have the right to decide what happens with their own bodies, and we must wonder if men would be far more understanding if they could become pregnant after sexual encounters ("Online abortion rights movement comes at a cost," Oct. 4 Review-Journal). Why are men so vocal on this truly female problem? Often when men get the news of a pregnancy, they disappear, and declarations of love and support for the pregnant mother disappear as well.
Most women know when they are financially, emotionally and physically able to care for a child. Safe contraceptives are the best answer to unwanted pregnancies, but some situations involve rape or incest and, sadly, carelessness on the part of two people not using birth control.
My sister-in-law was a nurse and had horror stories about abortions and attempted abortions in the 1950s. Screaming women coming to the hospital, some surviving, some not because they had tried to induce abortions by means of coat hangers or knitting needles. They suffered infections and bleeding in the days before effective antibiotics were available.
Recent remarks attributed to Planned Parenthood staff regarding organ harvesting are sickening and callous, and those employees should be removed at once from this government-funded group. But men who are arguing for legally banning abortions are kidding themselves. If that were to happen, abortion would continue and be made profitable to those who would perform unsafe procedures. Would you want to turn a daughter, girlfriend or friend over to such butchers?

Report robber's race
According to a Review-Journal brief, an 85-year-old man was robbed, and there was a description of the robbers ("Woman sought in robbery of 85-year-old man in NLV," Wednesday Review-Journal). The description of two women went into great detail, with height, weight, color of hair and even that they had purses.
But the description mentioned nothing about the color of their skin. How are we going to protect ourselves or help the police if we only know that these women have purses? This political correctness is driving me crazy. Hey, everyone, if you see two women with purses, watch out!
