Where’d that money come from, anyway?

To the editor:

I have only one question for Bob Fulkerson: Who do you think you are that you should dictate who gets to keep their money ("Stop coddling the spoiled elite," Sunday)?

The only wealthy people my income has been redistributed to are politicians. Mr. Fulkerson's reasoning highlights exactly what makes the progressive movement so wrong time after time.

One of my hobbies brings me into regular contact with people who have seven-figure incomes, and I can tell you that most of them are working 75 to 80 hours a week in addition to attending their kids' plays, games and school functions, just like middle-class parents.

Struggling single moms struggle because their income is half of a two-parent household. That is the reality. Unless the wealthy aren't paying child support, how are struggling women their fault?

The reason a single mom might be attending UNR is because she knows a degree will help her earn more money. Sadly for her, when she makes it financially, progressives such as Mr. Fulkerson will want to take her money, because they assume they know how to spend it better than she does.

Downtown savior

To the editor:

In response to recent negative headlines about downtown Las Vegas:

The solution to downtown's problems can be stated in one word -- blackjack. Go back to single deck, 3-to-2 on naturals and no sneaky rules that continue to screw the player. Why should gamblers travel here when they can get the same rip-off at their local Indian casino?

Bring back the Benny Binion way to run a casino (single deck and very liberal player comps) and you will see profits return 100-fold from your initial investment. Your hotel will be filled with gamblers wanting an even break for their gaming dollar.

I challenge just one farsighted owner to try it, and they will erect a statue in his honor as the savior of downtown Las Vegas.
