More punishment to protect the status quo

To the editor:

The fiscal turmoil in Washington is, unfortunately, providing sufficient cover for our ineffective and out-of-touch Nevada Legislature.

Lawmakers do not appear to be getting the message that tax increases of any kind are unacceptable. They have no qualms about reaching further into the pockets of their own constituents, many of whom are suffering economically, in order to protect the status quo with the government employee unions.

It is mind-boggling that legislators would protect the unions so fiercely, especially in severe economic times.

Missed the point

To the editor:

In Thursday's Review-Journal, an article by Shannon McCaffrey of The Associated Press about tax day "tea parties" was typical of the left-wing media's take on what the protests were all about.

Ms. McCaffrey reported that federal income taxes are at their lowest levels in decades. "President Obama has delivered even more tax relief since he took office in January," she wrote.

Wake up, Ms. McCaffrey. The protests were about the trillions of taxpayer dollars that President Obama and Congress are printing and spending now. Who does she think is going to pay for this mess they are putting us in? It's our children and grandchildren who will be on the hook for this excessive spending of taxpayer money.

These tea party protests are going to get bigger and bigger as more Americans wake up and realize this administration lied about "change."

Not a clue

To the editor:

First we are told that Guantanamo Bay will be closed down, and that enemy combatants will be brought into this country to face trial. Nothing to fear there.

Then, about a month ago, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano -- the former governor of Arizona -- tells us she just found out about Mexican drug cartels invading the Southwest. Nothing to fear there, either.

Now, Ms. Napolitano says we need to keep our guard up concerning the return of our soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan. According to a Homeland Security intelligence assessment, they might become right-wing conspirators ("Republicans blast extremists report," Thursday Review-Journal).

I think Ms. Napolitano is a clueless menace.
