Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, left, who faces trial on charges that he tried to sell or trade President Obama's former Senate seat for campaign money or a high-paying job for him or his wife. Apparently, Blago is still in the first step of his 12-step recovery program: denial.

"I am deeply saddened that my inappropriate comments have become a major distraction for my colleagues in the Assembly."

Mike Duvall, who resigned as a California assemblyman on Wednesday after bragging about extramarital affairs to a colleague before a July committee hearing, which was broadcast on cable television. Mr. Duval, a married, staunch family-values Republican, didn't realize his microphone was on. The videotaped conversation included gems such as: "So I am getting into spanking her." After resigning, Mr. Duval said he was merely engaging in locker-room hyperbole, and that there had been no affairs.

"You won't love every subject you study. You won't click with every teacher. Not every homework assignment will seem completely relevant to your life right this minute."

President Barack Obama, in what was billed as an inspirational, motivational speech to the nation's schoolchildren.

"We find this to be repugnant to the Constitution and a painful reminder of some of the most ignominious chapters of our national history."

Judge Milan D. Smith Jr. after a federal appeals court ruled that former Attorney General John Ashcroft can be sued by people who claim they were wrongfully detained as material witnesses after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
