MGM Resorts International has hired at least five former Metropolitan Police Department SWAT team members and several former military officers in recent months as it strengthens security at its properties following the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. The company also hired a former Marine Corps sergeant, who is also a firearms instructor, as an emergency response team supervisor in December. “MGM developed an Emergency Response Team Program as part of our commitment to continuous improvement of daily operations and to assess and address security risks,” MGM spokeswoman Debra DeShong said. Each of the five former Metro officers has more than 20 years of experience.

But a leading urban growth researcher says Orlando and Las Vegas are exceptions because of the strength of their regions’ tourism economies. The Raiders are building a 65,000-seat, $1.8 billion indoor stadium at Interstate 15 and Russell Road using $750 million of public money authorized by the Nevada Legislature. Mandalay Bay, the site of the Oct. 1 shooting, is not turning around as fast as expected, MGM Chief Executive Officer Jim Murren said Thursday. “This is a property that is undertaking a tremendous challenge” and it ”has lagged behind what we had predicted in terms of its performance,” Murren said. The property had a convention cancellation in February and several smaller meeting cancellations, Chief Operating Officer Corey Sanders said. While Mandalay Bay caters mainly to convention attendees some leisure tourists are also “electing to stay away” from the property, Sanders said.
Following four years of work and lengthy discussion on the need for better prepared high school graduates, the State Board of Education adopted new criteria for a standard high school diploma on Thursday. The requirements were increased from 22.5 credits to 23, adding two credits to demonstrate college or career readiness while reducing elective courses from 7.5 to 6 credits. The changes will take effect beginning with Nevada’s class of 2022, or next year’s freshmen. The change in the diploma reflects a change in need — board Vice President Mark Newburn noted that far fewer jobs require only a high school diploma or less today than was the case in the 1970s.
The Texas deputy who first flagged the license plate on suspected Las Vegas killer Anthony Wrobel’s vehicle outside a freeway rest stop last week is in his first year on the force, a fellow deputy said Thursday. When the Oldham County Sheriff’s Office rookie radioed K9 deputy Taner Blackburn, 34, for backup and to tell him the Utah plate came back stolen, Blackburn told him to stay back until he got there. Wrobel, 42, is suspected of opening fire at Sunset Park on two casino executives during a company picnic for employees of The Venetian on April 15. The arrest put an end to a days long nationwide manhunt that included investigators from several local and federal agencies.

A Las Vegas police officer has been demoted after failing to stop the death of an unarmed black man. Now former sergeant Travis Crumrine was in charge of officer Kenneth Lopera during the death of Tashii Brown last May. Lopera shocked Brown multiple times before placing him in an unapproved chokehold. Records show that originally, department officials accused Crumrine of failing to intervene by not ensuring that Lopera let go of Brown after he gave the officer an order to do so. Ultimately, Crumrine was demoted to police officer on Nov. 1 for neglect of duty and for failing to turn on his body camera during the interaction.

CDC Warns People to Steer Clear of Romaine After E. Coli Outbreak The Center for Disease Control and Prevention told people on Friday to stay away from the lettuce after a multi-state E. coli outbreak. 53 people have been infected across 16 states, with 31 people hospitalized. No deaths have occurred yet. Symptoms of E. coli poisoning include stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. The CDC says the outbreak came from lettuce near Yuma, Arizona, warning consumers to avoid any lettuce grown in the area. Product labels often do not identify growing regions; so, throw out any romaine lettuce if you’re uncertain about where it was grown. This includes whole heads and hearts of romaine, chopped romaine, and salads and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce.

Las Vegas racer Noah Gragson predicted he was in for a “rude awakening” in his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut. Instead, he finished second at Richmond Raceway in Virginia. Gragson normally drives for fellow Las Vegan Kyle Busch in the NASCAR Truck Series. The race at Richmond was one of three in which he will compete for former Super Bowl coach Joe Gibbs. The second one is this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, a restrictor-plate track at which Gragson has little experience. “Talladega, that one might come back in a ball or something. Man, I’m not too good of a restrictor-plate racer just because I don’t have a lot of experience.”
