7 months of construction to start on US 95

A three-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 95 will be narrowed to a single lane for seven months starting Thursday. Crews will be building freeway bridges in northwest Las Vegas.
Both directions of the highway will be reduced to one lane between Skye Canyon Park and Paiute drives from 5 a.m. Thursday to July 12.
Crews are building a new interchange bridge at Kyle Canyon Road as part of a larger $65 million upgrade of U.S. 95 in the northwest valley.

Raiders introduce Jon Gruden as head coach

The Raiders introduced Jon Gruden as their head coach on Tuesday. Gruden, 54, ends a nine-year tenure as an ESPN analyst to sign a 10-year, $100 million contract with the Raiders. He initially coached the franchise from 1998 to 2001, and hasn’t coached in the NFL since 2008 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gruden replaces Jack Del Rio, who the Raiders fired on Dec. 31 following a 6-10 season.

Almost half an inch of rain fell over the Las Vegas Valley overnight, according to the National Weather Service. The valley’s record-breaking 116-day dry streak ended Monday, with 0.14 inches of rain before midnight. The valley saw another 0.35 inches of rain between midnight and 6 a.m. Tuesday, the weather service said.

Firefighter injured battling fire at strip mall

A firefighter was injured and was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening when a fire broke out at a strip mall in the southwest Las Vegas Valley Monday night.
The fire was first reported at 10:52 p.m. on the 3400 block of Jones Boulevard, near Desert Inn Road, and as of 1:30 a.m. Tuesday firefighters and police were still at the scene. At least seven businesses were damaged, including a furniture store at the north end of the mall. The strip mall also houses several restaurants, including Fuku Burger, which was on the opposite end from where the fire broke out.

Summerlin’s newest park offers kid-friendly adventures

Fox Hill Park — Summerlin’s newest park — has been getting plenty of visitors since opening in mid-December. The “adventure play-themed” park offers 20 play structures, including a 32-foot climbing tower, a zip line, a giant climbing structure called The Orange Beast, a disc golf course, custom swings, a climbing fort and a spinning machine.

House ethics panel to investigate allegations against Kihuen

The House Ethics Committee has named a panel to investigate sexual harassment allegations against Democratic Rep. Ruben Kihuen. Several women alleged that Kihuen inappropriately touched them, or made unwanted and untoward comments and advances. Kihuen denied “the allegations in question” and said he was looking forward to working with the panel. The panel will include Rep. Kenny Marchant, R-Texas, Rep. Yvette D. Clarke, D-N.Y., Rep. Jackie Walorski, R-Ind., and Rep. Brian Higgins, D-N.Y.
