51s drop PCL season opener at Fresno, 2-1

Matt Dominguez’s RBI double in the seventh inning sent the Fresno Grizzlies past the 51s 2-1 in both teams’ Pacific Coast League opener Thursday night in Fresno, Calif.

Las Vegas, the two-time reigning Pacific Conference South Division champion, didn’t register a hit until the seventh, when Eric Campbell and Johnny Monell led off the inning with back-to-back singles off reliever Jake Buchanan (1-0). Campbell scored on Danny Muno’s double-play grounder to tie the score at 1.

Matt Duffy’s run-scoring groundout opened the scoring in the sixth inning.

Making his 51s debut, starter Steven Matz allowed one run on three hits and three walks and struck out four in 5 1/3 innings. Fresno starter Brad Peacock blanked Las Vegas on no hits and five walks and struck out two in 4 2/3 innings. Buchanan worked the final four innings.

John Church (0-1), the second of three 51s relievers, entered in the seventh inning and gave up consecutive singles to Max Stassi and Jon Singleton. After a strikeout, Chase Bradford replaced Church and was greeted by Dominguez’s decisive double.
