51s hammer Zephyrs to remain hot

The 51s got plenty of power on offense and eight strong innings from starter Jesse Chavez in an 8-0 Pacific Coast League victory over the host New Orleans Zephyrs on Saturday.

Las Vegas (19-17), which had its eight-game winning streak snapped Thursday and got rained out Friday in Oklahoma City, improved to 13-2 in its last 15 games, after going 6-15 in the first 21 games.

Chavez (5-1, 2.63 ERA) allowed three hits and no walks, with five strikeouts, before giving way in the ninth to Evan Crawford, who retired the Zephyrs in order to complete the shutout.

The 51s got the only run they would need right away, with Adeiny Hechavarria homering to lead off the first inning, igniting a four-homer night for Las Vegas. Travis d'Arnaud had a two-run bomb in the third, Yan Gomes hit a solo shot in the fourth, and Anthony Gose homered to open the fifth.

Las Vegas scored two runs in the eighth, including a Ricardo Nanita RBI double.

Travis Snider had an RBI groundout in the first, and Mike McCoy capped the onslaught with an RBI single after Nanita's eighth-inning double.
