51s squander chances as Portland prevails

Yordany Ramirez and Paul McAnulty hit back-to-back two-out RBI singles in the eighth inning Thursday night to propel the Portland Beavers to a 4-2 win over the 51s in a Pacific Coast League game in Portland, Ore.

Ramirez's hit, his third of the night, came after he fought back from an 0-and-2 count from losing pitcher Rick Bauer (0-2). The hit came after pinch hitter Michael Epping capped a 12-pitch plate appearance by drawing a walk.

Bauer was charged with two runs on two hits and two walks in one inning of relief.

Las Vegas (58-70) squandered numerous prime scoring opportunities. It loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth and seventh and totaled one run in those innings.

Marshall McDougall went 3-for-3 with a double and his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot in the second inning, gave the 51s a 1-0 lead.

The Beavers (52-76) went up 2-1 in the third on consecutive RBI singles from Brady Clark and Brian Myrow. Myrow, a former 51s player, finished 3-for-4 as Portland held an 11-9 edge in hits.

Each starting pitcher held the opponent to one earned run. Las Vegas' William Juarez worked 5 1/3 innings and Portland's Roger Deago six. Scott Cassidy (3-4) won with one perfect inning of relief.

The teams play again at 2:05 p.m. today in Portland.
