Aztecs roll to win; Shepard suspended
SAN DIEGO - Jamaal Franklin scored 19 of his 28 points in the first half and had 12 rebounds as No. 25 San Diego State bounced back from a 13-point loss to No. 8 Syracuse by routing San Diego Christian 91-57 in the Aztecs' home opener Tuesday night.
The game had been scheduled for Sunday night but was pushed back when SDSU's season-opening game against Syracuse on the USS Midway aircraft carrier was postponed from Friday night to Sunday afternoon because of the threat of rain. Syracuse won that game, 62-49.
Chase Tapley scored 18 for SDSU (1-1).
The game counted as an exhibition for the Hawks, who got 15 points from Kevin Dawson and 14 from Kwaminique Brandon.
Earlier Tuesday, SDSU freshman forward Winston Shepard, a former Findlay Prep player, was suspended for three games by the NCAA for violating preferential treatment legislation. SDSU said it has appealed the penalty, but the suspension will be enforced during the process. The school declined to provide specifics, saying only that the player inadvertently violated a rule and that the coaching staff reported it to the compliance staff, which self-reported it to the NCAA.
Shepard was cited for marijuana possession on campus in late June. A school spokesman said Shepard was disciplined by coach Steve Fisher, and the penalty did not involve being suspended from games.
■ New Mexico 86, Davidson 81 - At Albuquerque, N.M., Tony Snell had 25 points, including a shot clock-beating 3-pointer with a minute left that helped the Lobos complete a comeback win over Davidson. The game started just before midnight Monday and ended around 2 a.m. Tuesday as part of ESPN's college basketball marathon.
De'Mon Brooks scored 22 points for the Wildcats (1-1), who led 50-36 early in the second half.
The Lobos (1-0) got back into the game in part because of a dominating performance on the boards. After getting outrebounded in the first half, New Mexico had a 27-7 margin after the break.
■ Boise State 88, Oakland 80 - At Boise, Idaho, Anthony Drmic had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and Derrick Marks scored 18 points as the Broncos beat the Golden Grizzlies.
