Basic rips Green Valley in Henderson Bowl
October 16, 2009 - 9:00 pm
Basic forced four turnovers and returned two interceptions for touchdowns on the way to a 41-14 road win over Green Valley on Thursday night.
It was the second year in a row that Basic beat its rival in the Henderson Bowl.
"It means a lot to this school," Basic coach Jeff Cahill said. "In the 90s Green Valley dominated this rivalry, and it feels good to not only have (the bowl), but retain it."
The seventh-ranked Wolves (6-1, 3-1 Southeast League) got a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown from Blaze Galardy, and a 59-yard TD return by Kelly Armistead.
Basic had allowed a 64-yard TD run by Traveece Jackson on the game's opening drive but was able to stifle the Gators from there. Green Valley (3-4, 1-2) didn't score again until backup quarterback Paul McKay connected with Jarod Mielcarek for a 22-yard TD pass with 1:35 to play.
"(Jackson) had a great run, but after that we tightened the screws down," Cahill said.
Basic quarterback Tyler Dobbins had touchdown runs of 3 and 5 yards. Omar Valenzuela added a 3-yard touchdown run, and backup quarterback Vince Carducci hit Travis Tatiano with a 10-yard TD pass.
