Today at Hollywood Park

By Richard Eng

Post Time 12:30 p.m.

Race 1 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $27,000, Claiming $20,0003-year-olds and up

2 Rooster City - Speedball was claimed by John Sadler; home court edge as he is stationed at Betfair Hollywood Park.

1 Joe Carl - Claimed in last by the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; dead late closer has never been out of the money over dirt.

Long Shot - 5 Streets of Heaven

Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds

5 Russidiculous - Strong debut when beat down to 7/2 odd; if he improves one step he'll be double tough to handle.

2 War Academy - FTS from the Bob Baffert barn; will shrug off the BC debacle with a big meet in Inglewood.

Long Shot - 3 Treasury Bill

Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

1 Tip Your Hat - Claimed by Carl O'Callaghan from Mike Mitchell; he is a hard trainer to claim from and win first out.

3 Around the Twig - Was overmatched in last, first off the claim by Keith Craigmyle; is dropped down and adding blinkers on.

Long Shot - 6 Siempre Esperanza

Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

6 Drift King - Ran for $25K two races back, and won; 7-YO veteran clearly fits at this reduced level.

8 Gnarly Dude - Aggressive class rise after running well in last for $12,500; opens up some O/C and starter allowance conditions.

Long Shot - 3 Max Cooper

Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds

4 Doinghardtimeagain - Lost two half-length decisions in promising races; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.

1 Embossing - FTS from Jerry Hollendorfer; Rafael Bejarano, who had a putrid Breeders' Cup, should rebound this meet.

Long Shot - 3 Rockin Cowgirl

Race 6 - 6 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $42,000, Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds

8 Grumpy Small Mouth - Last loss snapped a three race win streak; we'll see if he's over the top or ready to start another streak.

7 Love That Action - His two best races were in turf sprints; looks like he prefers to sit back and make one run.

Long Shot - 5 Until You

Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds

1 Akiss Forarose - Exits four Cal-bred stakes for this first level allowance; good spot for a confidence booster.

7 Tribal Gal - Speedball did a pop and stop in the much tougher Generous Portion; gets class relief in a much easier spot.

Long Shot - 8 Home Journey

Race 8 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $42,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

1 Candy Trophy - Gutsy win in last, making it wins in two of her last three; saves all the ground inside.

6 Mia Isabel - Won first off the claim by Doug O'Neill; capable of repeating due to her extensive back class.

Long Shot - 7 Risky Art

Best Bet - 6 Drift King (race 4)

Santa Anita Thursday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/5/$34.00; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$5.40

Santa Anita Final Totals - 418/93/$670.20; Long Shots, 210/36/$409.60; Best Bets, 24/7/$20.80

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #5 Clement Rock (7/2) in race 4 at Churchill Downs. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Fleurdefortyfour ran out at Churchill Downs. Stats - 166/114/$1,006.70; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
