Race 1 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $14,000, Claiming $8,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 May B – After a monstrous opening day, it is typically hard to repeat; this is a weak vote in the opener, Mark Glatt claim has some decent back class races.
7 Kingsbury – When the morning line favorite is trained by Jim Crotts, I have to admit, I’ve never heard of him; watch the tote board activity for more clues.
Long Shot – 4 Redistribute
Race 2 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Elimination Round – Has been competitive facing tougher foes at Del Mar; I thought the track on opening day was a rally wide bias with a dead inside lane.
6 Lana Caprina – The key to this vote is her race two back is fast enough to give these trouble; this is a very weak group so a lot of things can happen.
Long Shot – 1 Wild Street Party
Race 3 – 1 mile, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
9 Black Tie – If the rally wide bias continues on day 2, then this guy draws well to take advantage of it; trainer Lloyd Wicker won a race on opening day too.
4 Three Red Sevens – Trainer Andy Mathis had a good Del Mar with his NoCal Golden Gate shippers; would not be surprised to see the same kind of results at Los Alamitos.
Long Shot – 1 Food Stamps
Race 4 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
3 I Will Score – With 7 FTS in here, you’ll have a big edge over me; you’ll have a chance to see the tote board action and see which firsters come up white hot.
4 Mighty Moses – Trainer Bob Baffert popped a FTS at 9/2 on opening day; he has an uncoupled entry in here so caveat emptor, this one has stable rider Martin Garcia up.
Long Shot – 1 Money Makin Mike
Race 5 – 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Starter allowance $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
4 Congregationalist – Exits a big win at Del Mar while coming off the shelf; was not claimed from Vladimir Cerin so the horse runs protected in this starter allowance.
2 Jonny’s Choice – If you have followed me for 18 years in the paper, you know how much I like cutbacks; Santiago Gonzalez can sit a trip and do a rally wide move.
Long Shot – 1 Justification
Race 6 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
2 Tangled Up in Ju – Typical green debut, slow beginning when squeezed back start, settled into stride and gained ground late; big shot if leaves the gate with others.
1 Good Looking – Claimed by trainer Rafael DeLeon and runs protected tonight; the rail was kind of dead on opening day, could see him sit and then rally wide late.
Long Shot – 4 Sharpest One
Race 7 – 1 mile, Purse $14,000, Claiming $8,000, 3-year-olds and up
10 Harbaugh – Early speed did not fare well on opening day; what I like about this guy is he looks like lone early speed, so Mario Gutierrez can control the pace.
2 Go Jeremiah – We’ll see how he does going around 2-turns for the first time; has been a closing sprinter, but that does not always translate well going long.
Long Shot – 6 Captain Corrigan
Race 8 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
10 One Putt Par – Lot of respect for Ed Moger, a very skilled NoCal conditioner; he adds blinkers on but the key for me is an outer post and some late game energy.
7 Zenergy – I respect every starter trainer Bob Baffert sends out at Los Alamitos; the thing is he does not have to send any horses here, but he wants to be racing.
Long Shot – 6 Of Course It Is
