Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, April 24
April 23, 2015 - 10:55 pm
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Bentley’s Gone - First things first is the hottest rider in SoCal, Tyler Baze is up; second was the strong improvement last time out.
3 My Ole Bud - Ssliding down the maiden claiming ladder; should solid improvement in second career start and could improve some more.
Long Shot - 2 Doyouknowsomething
Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Quality Chimes - Like the rail post a lot in one mile races on turf or dirt; rider can easily save ground with a decent horse under him.
4 Feel the Charge - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; exits a bullet work, a very positive sign.
Long Shot - 6 Jackie K
Race 3 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $45,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Kiama - Another Tyler Baze mount leaves from the rail post at a mile distance; has plenty of Eastern back class.
3 Zanbo - Flavien Prat is riding instead of Rafael Bejarano; claimed by Vann Belvoir, caveat emptor, he has an uncoupled entry in here.
Long Shot - 2 Spelling Again
Race 4 - 1 mile, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 I Heart You - Denise Breuer doesn’t win many races in SoCal; this one has a huge shot with her back class racing at this bottom rung.
5 Private Marina - Matt Chew takes the weight off with a 5-pound bugboy; Gonzalo Nicolas has impressed in his brief stint in SoCal.
Long Shot - 2 Vegas Bound
Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $20,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Chaulk O Lattey - I usually don’t like the rail down the hillside course; this filly took to the grass last out like white on rice.
5 Desert Steel - Have to put Tyler Baze’s mounts up a notch accounting for how hot he’s been; gets class relief from last time.
Long Shot - 3 Gouyen
Race 6 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies, 3-year-olds
1 Seek Safe Harbor - Has the rail post and early speed to pop the gate while saving ground; simple tactics for Gonzalo Nicolas.
4 Awe Gee - Chance to sit a perfect trip if the obvious speed horses duel; Martin Pedroza is hot off a sharp Illinois Derby victory.
Long Shot - 3 Champion Risk
Race 7 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Cervaro - Don’t usually like a dead late closer with the turf rail out 30 feet; key is the huge class drop for trainer John Sadler.
4 City State - If there is an upsetter, it is this lone speed possibility; could bugboy Gonzalo Nicolas record a hat trick.
Long Shot - 1 Wings of Mojave
Race 8 - 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Divine Tale - Was flying by horses like a speeding car passing a picket fence; chance to give Tyler Baze another last race victory.
4 Prettypreciousheir - Speedball is sliding down in class to this bottom rung; chance to lead these pillar to post.
Long Shot - 3 Euroclydon
Best Bet - 1 Divine Tale (race 8)
Santa Anita Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$39.00; Long Shots, 9/2/$17.00; Best Bet, 1/1/$6.40
Santa Anita Winter Meet Final Totals - 1,107/296/$1,897.00; Long Shots, 554/83/$841.40; Best Bets, 68/25/$119.20
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #6 Empress Maker (9/2) in race 7 at Keeneland. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Relentless Spirit ran out at Keeneland. Stats - 56/38/$258.70; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
