Big inning subdues 51s in 11-1 loss
Darren Ford hit a grand slam to cap a nine-run eighth inning that lifted the Fresno Grizzlies to an 11-1 victory over the 51s in the Pacific Coast League opener Thursday at Fresno, Calif.
Las Vegas starter Brad Mills (0-1) struck out seven in seven innings and exited with the 51s trailing 2-1. Then the roof caved in, as the Grizzlies sent 12 batters to the plate in the eighth against relievers Josh Roenicke and Chad Cordero.
Roenicke didn't retire any of five batters, hitting the leadoff man and walking three. The other reached on an error.
Cordero allowed two bases-loaded walks and an RBI single, followed by Ford's slam.
The 51s scored in the sixth when Brett Lawrie's single knocked in Brian Jeroloman.
Grizzlies starter Ryan Vogelsong went 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run and three hits, striking out nine and walking two.
The four-game series continues at 7:05 p.m. today.
