Big second inning gets 51s past Padres

Yan Gomes hit a two-run double to highlight the 51s' four-run second inning Wednesday night in their 7-4 victory over the Tucson Padres in a Pacific Coast League game in Tucson, Ariz.

Danny Perales had a run-scoring double and Anthony Gose an RBI single in the second to give Las Vegas (29-24) a lead it didn't relinquish. Gose also stole his 24th base of the season in the inning.

51s starter Andrew Carpenter (3-0) struck out nine in five innings, holding the Padres (19-34) to two runs on six hits and no walks. Chad Beck pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his eighth save.

Eric Thames, in his first game this season for Las Vegas after being demoted this week by the Toronto Blue Jays, went 2-for-4 and scored twice. He singled in the second and hit a solo homer in the 51s' two-run seventh.

Travis d'Arnaud went 3-for-5 and had one of the 51s' five doubles in helping Las Vegas to a 12-11 edge in hits. Adam Lind and d'Arnaud had consecutive doubles in the fifth to put Las Vegas up 5-1, and Lind added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Tucson scored single runs in the first, fifth, seventh and eighth innings, with Jedd Gyorko homering in the first and Matt Clark in the fifth. Clark finished 4-for-5, including an RBI single in the seventh.

Padres starter Jorge Reyes (3-6) gave up five runs on nine hits and one walk and struck out five in six innings.
