Bishop Gorman baseball standout Malm makes junior national team
Bishop Gorman baseball standout Jeff Malm has been selected to the U.S. junior national team.
Malm, who will begin his junior year this fall, made the 20-man U.S. roster after batting .333 and pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings during a tryout in Joplin, Mo.
Malm is one of three juniors on the roster. The rest of the team is made up of players from the class of 2007 or 2008.
Malm was a first-team all-state selection as a sophomore after batting .453 with four homers and 57 RBIs in leading the Gaels to a second consecutive state championship. He also posted an 8-2 record with a 1.91 ERA on the mound.
Malm became the third local player to make a national team this summer.
Girls basketball star Italee Lucas, who graduated from Centennial this summer, played for the U.S. U19 world championship team this summer.
Lucas averaged 4.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in helping the United States go 9-0 and win the championship at the FIBA U19 World Championships in Slovakia.
Another 2007 graduate, Palo Verde boys volleyball standout Joe Kauliakamoa, is playing for the U.S. youth national team at the FIVB Youth World Championships in Mexico.
The United States is 1-3 in the tournament.
• BASEBALL COMMITMENT -- Arbor View baseball standout Dustin Hobbs has committed to pitch at Kansas State.
Hobbs, who will be a senior this fall, was a second-team all-state selection as a junior after going 7-4 with a 2.60 ERA this spring and helping the Aggies reach the state tournament.
