Boise State beats deadline, will leave Mountain West

As expected, Boise State sent its letter of resignation to the Mountain West Conference on Saturday, UNLV president Neal Smatresk said.

The letter arrived ahead of a midnight Saturday deadline for Boise State to notify the MWC of whether the school intended to follow through on its plan to leave the conference after the 2012-13 academic year - primarily for the football team to move to the Big East Conference.

Boise State was already due to forfeit $2.5 million in future revenue as a penalty for exiting the conference beginning in 2013-14. However, had the school not met the deadline, it would have had to pay an additional $5 million penalty.
