Brock loses job at Army
WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Army football coach Stan Brock was fired Friday, six days after the Black Knights were soundly beaten by archrival Navy.
"I was disappointed with the results on the field, with the Rutgers game and the game against Navy," athletic director Kevin Anderson said. "That was an eye-opening experience. I thought that we had made progress. I thought we had narrowed the gap between the talent levels."
The Black Knights lost 34-0 to Navy, ending a trying season that included a 30-3 loss to Rutgers.
Brock was 6-18 record in two years, going 3-9 each season. He was told of the decision after a short meeting with Anderson, who did an earlier evaluation, made some recommendations and gave Brock time to think about them.
Brock, a former NFL offensive lineman, was Army's offensive line coach for three years before replacing Bobby Ross in early 2007. He had no previous Division I college coaching experience.
Anderson said he would prefer a coach with ties to West Point.
Army has not had a winning record since 1996.
* NOTRE DAME -- Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis needs to have surgery on his right knee before doctors can operate on his more seriously injured left knee.
Weis found out this week that he has a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee as well as damage to a bone that will require doctors to shave the bone, school spokesman Brian Hardin said.
Weis could undergo surgery as early as next week before the Irish (6-6) leave Friday to play in the Hawaii Bowl or could wait until the first or second week of January.
* TENNESSEE -- Former coach Phillip Fulmer will be an alumni volunteer instead of a special assistant to Tennessee president John Petersen.
Petersen says Fulmer has decided against the special assistant job that was announced by the university Monday. Fulmer would have been hired for three months with a privately funded salary of $37,500 to assist with fundraising and outreach efforts.
* IOWA STATE -- Iowa State coach Gene Chizik is in the running for the Auburn job, Cyclones athletic director Jamie Pollard said.
Pollard acknowledged that Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs recently contacted him to speak with Chizik about the Tigers vacancy.
Pollard said in a statement that his understanding is that Chizik -- the Tigers' defensive coordinator from 2002 to 2004 -- has met with Auburn officials and is a serious candidate for the job.
"Auburn's interest in Gene speaks to his reputation," Pollard said in a statement.
Under Chizik in 2004, the Tigers allowed a nation-low 11.3 points per game en route to an unbeaten season.
* BOWLING GREEN -- Bowling Green hired former Tennessee offensive coordinator Dave Clawson as its head coach.
Clawson spent only one season at Tennessee, but newly hired Volunteers' coach Lane Kiffin decided not to keep him on staff. Clawson replaces Gregg Brandon, who was fired after six seasons.
* DIVISION II FINAL -- Northwest Missouri State is back for another crack at the Division II national football championship, while Minnesota-Duluth is playing in its first title game.
Northwest Missouri (13-1) is competing today in its fourth consecutive championship game, having lost the last three by a combined 12 points.
It will be only the third playoff appearance for Minnesota-Duluth (14-0) and also marks the first time a Northern Sun Conference member has played for the title.
