BYU women’s golfers lead UNLV Spring Invitational
Brigham Young overcame the 40 mph winds and rain that swept over Boulder Creek Golf Club on Monday to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the UNLV Spring Invitational women's golf tournament.
The Cougars shot 8-under-par 280, highlighted by individual leader Kelsey Vines' 6-under 66, to lead No. 24 Oklahoma by two. No. 25 Pepperdine (285), UNLV (296) and Idaho (297) rounded out the top five in the 15-team, 54-hole tourney.
"I was happy with the way we played our last five, six holes," Rebels coach Amy Bush said. "We've got time to make up the ground. We just need to putt better. We left a lot of birdies out there."
Defending medalist Therese Koelbaek was tied for fifth after a team-best 2-under 70 for UNLV, which is trying to win the event for the third consecutive year.
Katerina Prorokova had the Rebels' next best score, tied for 14th at 72. Also for UNLV, Alejandra Guacaneme shot 76, and Bethany Glassford and Ellis Keenan each carded 78s.
Second-round play begins at 8 a.m. today, with the final round Wednesday.
