Calvary Chapel romps in opener
Early in Thursday's first game of the Class A state baseball tournament between Calvary Chapel and Wells, both teams had several base-running mistakes, including runners picked off base.
But the Lions' bats awakened, and the Leopards were sent into the losers' bracket.
Calvary Chapel broke open a scoreless game with an 11-run third inning and won 16-0 in five innings at Henderson International.
The Lions will meet Pahranagat Valley, an 18-4 winner over Carlin, at 1:30 p.m. today. Wells and Carlin will play at noon, with the winner facing the Calvary Chapel-Pahranagat Valley loser at 4.
Calvary Chapel got two-run homers from Cory Welch and Nick Kingham in the third as 16 Lions players batted.
"We are a very young team that is trying to get better," Calvary Chapel coach Glen Evans said. "We can't worry about what everyone else is doing; our only concern is to continue to get better and win ballgames."
Freshman pitcher Anthony Uran, seeing his first action in nearly two weeks, blanked the Leopards on two singles.
* Pahranagat Valley 18, Carlin 4 -- The Panthers erased a 4-0 deficit in a big way.
William Vea and Jared Wadsworth hit grand slams for Pahranagat Valley, which scored 10 fifth-inning runs.
Panthers pitchers Kyle Mulliner and Kenny Turley combined on a three-hitter.
Carlin's Matthew Matosich opened the scoring with a two-run double in the first inning.
SOFTBALL
* Pahranagat Valley 16, Eureka 4 -- The Panthers rode a six-run second inning to victory.
Pahranagat Valley scored in each inning despite finishing with only five hits.
* Carlin 12, Laughlin 4 -- Carlin broke open a tight game with six runs in the fifth inning.
Carlin pitcher Alyssa Bowers allowed one run and one hit after the first inning. Andrea Gonzales hit a home run and a triple for the Railroaders.
Pahranagat Valley will meet Carlin at 2 p.m. today. Eureka will face Laughlin at noon.
