Calvary Chapel romps in opener

Early in Thursday's first game of the Class A state baseball tournament between Calvary Chapel and Wells, both teams had several base-running mistakes, including runners picked off base.

But the Lions' bats awakened, and the Leopards were sent into the losers' bracket.

Calvary Chapel broke open a scoreless game with an 11-run third inning and won 16-0 in five innings at Henderson International.

The Lions will meet Pahranagat Valley, an 18-4 winner over Carlin, at 1:30 p.m. today. Wells and Carlin will play at noon, with the winner facing the Calvary Chapel-Pahranagat Valley loser at 4.

Calvary Chapel got two-run homers from Cory Welch and Nick Kingham in the third as 16 Lions players batted.

"We are a very young team that is trying to get better," Calvary Chapel coach Glen Evans said. "We can't worry about what everyone else is doing; our only concern is to continue to get better and win ballgames."

Freshman pitcher Anthony Uran, seeing his first action in nearly two weeks, blanked the Leopards on two singles.

* Pahranagat Valley 18, Carlin 4 -- The Panthers erased a 4-0 deficit in a big way.

William Vea and Jared Wadsworth hit grand slams for Pahranagat Valley, which scored 10 fifth-inning runs.

Panthers pitchers Kyle Mulliner and Kenny Turley combined on a three-hitter.

Carlin's Matthew Matosich opened the scoring with a two-run double in the first inning.
