Calvary coasts into 1A final

Calvary Chapel is proving it has the best pitching staff in Class 1A baseball.

Cameron Harper tossed a two-hitter in the Lions' 13-1 victory over Pahranagat Valley on Friday in the 1A state tournament at Henderson International school.

Calvary is a victory away from its goal of a state championship, needing only to defeat Pahranagat Valley again at 10 a.m. today. The Panthers reached the title game with a 9-7 win over Carlin late Friday.

Pahranagat Valley needs two wins over the Lions today to grab the title.

"We're just continuing to get better," Calvary Chapel coach Glen Evans said. "We're a young team, but the kids continue to improve each time out."

In two tournament games, Lions pitchers have allowed only five hits in 10 innings. Harper struck out 13 Friday.

Calvary Chapel also has been impressive at the plate, hitting .420. Cory Welch (four RBIs), Joey Criscuollo and Harper homered against Pahranagat Valley.

• Pahranagat Valley 9, Carlin 7 -- Colton Higbee hit two home runs as the Panthers advanced to the championship game, rallying with a three-run sixth inning.

Anthony Matosich and Blayne Newman homered for the Railroaders.

Carlin 7, Wells 6 -- Mathew Matosich's RBI single in the ninth inning was the difference as the Railroaders eliminated Wells.

CLASS 1A SOFTBALL

Pahranagat Valley 8, Carlin 4 -- The Panthers scored seven runs in their final two at-bats to advance to the state final.

Pahranagat Valley will meet Carlin at 10 a.m. today, with the Panthers needing one win for the crown.

Carlin 6, Laughlin 3 -- Carlin erased a 3-0 deficit by scoring twice in the first, second and sixth innings.

Samantha Salisbury got the win for the Railroaders as Laughlin was held hitless after the first inning.

Laughlin 14, Eureka 0 -- Laughlin scored seven runs in the first inning on its way to eliminating Eureka.

Riyan Flannelly tossed a two-hitter and also hit a home run in the victory.

CLASS 2A BASEBALL

Silver Stage won a pair of games to advance to the championship round of the Class 2A state tournament at Needles, Calif.

The Nighthawks beat Lincoln County 8-2 and Needles 12-5. Needles and Lincoln County will play at 9 a.m., today with the winner facing Silver Stage at 11:30. Should Silver Stage lose, a second game would be played at 2 p.m.

CLASS 2A SOFTBALL

Host Needles went 2-0 to move into the championship round.

The Mustangs beat Silver Stage 15-1 and edged Battle Mountain 2-1. Battle Mountain plays Lincoln County at 10 a.m. today, with the winner facing Needles at noon. If Needles loses, the teams would play again at 2 p.m.
