Cecil pitches 51s past Colorado Springs
Brett Cecil pitched six strong innings and J.P. Arencibia hit a key two-run single in the sixth that carried the 51s to a 6-2 Pacific Coast League victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Friday night in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Cecil (2-0) limited the Sky Sox (4-5) to two runs, one earned, on seven hits and two walks. The left-hander struck out three, lowering his ERA to 2.45, in the opener of the teams' four-game series.
Arencibia's key hit came with two outs after Colorado Springs starter Chaz Roe had walked the bases loaded, and it gave Las Vegas (7-2) a 3-1 lead. Roe (0-2) gave up only two hits in 5 2/3 innings but walked four.
The Sky Sox pulled within 3-2 on Chris Frey's two-out, pop-fly RBI single in the sixth. But shortstop Jesus Merchan threw out Michael McKenry, who was trying to score from first base on the play, at home to end the inning.
Brett Wallace and Brian Dopirak hit back-to-back two-out homers in the ninth for the 51s to cap the scoring.
Colorado Springs went on top 1-0 in the fourth on McKenry's two-out RBI single. Las Vegas tied it in the fifth on an Arencibia single and two errors.
Arencibia and Jarrett Hoffpauir each had two of the 51s' seven hits.
