Cincinnati’s run to final blocked by Florida State

Cincinnati guard Deonta Vaughn planned on playing in the championship game of the Global Sports Classic, and he expected to see UNLV there, too.

Vaughn and the Bearcats will play the Rebels today, but only because both teams lost in Friday's third round.

Florida State defeated Cincinnati 58-47, and the Seminoles (6-0) advanced to meet California (5-0) in the title game at 7:30 tonight.

The Golden Bears blew out UNLV 73-55, dropping the Rebels' record at the Thomas & Mack Center to 42-4 since the start of the 2006-07 season.

"This is their first time losing a home game in a long time," Vaughn said. "We know they're going to come out and play hard. We've got to match UNLV's intensity."

The Rebels (5-1) and Bearcats (4-1) will play at 5 p.m., and both teams will be looking to get back on track.

Vaughn scored a team-high 16 points, but he shot 5-for-18 as Cincinnati could not overcome its 33 percent shooting.

The Bearcats coasted past four lightweight opponents before running into a bigger and stronger Florida State team.

"We figured this was going to be our first big test," Vaughn said. "We're a hard nosed grind-it-out team that plays physical, but we didn't bring our toughness tonight."

Ryan Reid led the Seminoles with 14 points, Chris Singleton scored 10 and Toney Douglas had eight points and 11 rebounds.

North Carolina A&T 67, Texas-Pan American 60 -- Tavarus Alston had 16 points and seven rebounds as the Aggies (3-3) held off the Broncs (2-4).

Senior forward Emmanuel Jones led Pan American with 27 points and nine rebounds.

The Broncs are coached by Tom Schuberth, who played one season at UNLV for coach Jerry Tarkanian in 1976-77.

Coastal Carolina 69, Western Illinois 60 -- Junior forward Joseph Harris carried the Chanticleers to their first win of the season with a 27-point, 13-rebound effort.

But it was Anthony Breeze who made the most important play for Coastal Carolina (1-4). Breeze's layup with two seconds to go tied the game, and Breeze added five points as the Chanticleers outscored the Leathernecks 9-0 in overtime. Breeze finished with 14 points.
