Clark boys win, claim final 4A state soccer berth

Salvador Bernal had three goals Wednesday to lead Clark's boys soccer team to a 4-1 win over Eldorado at Bettye Wilson Park to claim the final berth in the Class 4A state tournament.
Victor Solis added a goal and Omar Magana and Raul Castro each had assists for the Chargers (18-2-2), who lost 2-0 to Bishop Gorman in the Sunset Region championship game.
Josh Cormier scored for Sunrise runner-up Eldorado (13-3-5).
Clark plays Sunrise champion Las Vegas in the state semifinals at 4 p.m. Friday at Bettye Wilson Park. Gorman plays Northern champion Galena in the other semifinal at 6 p.m.
• FOOTBALL ALL-STARS -- Four area players have been selected to play in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl on Jan. 2 at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C.
Three Bishop Gorman players have been selected to play in the game -- offensive lineman Sam Womack, safety John Therrell and defensive back Charles Childers.
Childers has committed to play football at UNLV.
Also selected to play was Silverado defensive end Keenan Graham. Graham recently committed to play football at UCLA.
The game will be broadcast on Fox College Sports.
• HEISMAN WINNERS -- Boulder City's Caiti Forrester and Brett Leibowitz of The Meadows have been named the Nevada winners of the annual Wendy's High School Heisman.
Leibowitz was a three-year varsity letter winner in basketball and football.
Forrester has lettered in basketball, soccer, track, volleyball and softball for the Eagles.
The state winners will be narrowed to 12 national finalists, who will travel to New York to participate in the Heisman weekend festivities. One male and one female will be named national winners.
The High School Heisman award recognizes athletes for their accomplishments in athletics, academics and community service.
• SOCCER HONORS -- Eldorado's Jonnathan Cabrera, Tech's Jose Guiza, Clark's Salvador Bernal and Centennial's Kevin Rogge took the top honors as the area's Class 4A boys soccer coaches released their all-league teams.
Cabrera was named the Northeast League Player of the Year after helping the Sundevils to a second-place finish in the league.
His coach, Gerald Pentsil, was the Northeast Coach of the Year.
In the Southeast, Guiza took Player of the Year honors, and Tech coach Josh Jones was the Coach of the Year after the Roadrunners won the Southeast.
League champion Centennial swept the awards in the Northwest, where Kevin Rogge was the Player of the Year and Tommy Porrello took the coaching award.
In the Southwest, Clark's Salvador Bernal was Player of the Year, and Juan Chavez was the Coach of the Year after guiding the Chargers to the league title.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK MALE Joaquin RivasLas Vegas The junior forward scored with less than a minute to play to give the Wildcats a 3-2 win over Eldorado for the Sunrise Region soccer championship. It was Rivas' second goal of the game. FEMALE Hayley Spelman Durango The senior opposite hitter had 40 kills, 10 digs, four blocks and three aces in Durango's 3-2 win over Bishop Gorman in the Sunset Region volleyball title match. In three regional tournament matches, Spelman had 111 kills.
