Outlook: The Eagles lost some of their top swimmers from last season's fourth-place boys team but return a star in Grothe.

 

CANYON SPRINGS

Coach: Jonathan Hillmer

Top swimmers: Boys, Dennis Burdasch (Jr.); Rafael Alcala (Jr.); Lee Ross (So.). Girls, Britney Poti (Sr.); Ashley Dansby (Jr.); Andeyla Ramos (So.)

Outlook: The teams graduated a solid core of seniors last season and are going to rely heavily on underclassmen.

 

CHAPARRAL

Coach: Jen Hashagen

Top swimmers: Boys, Kourtney Cooper (Sr.); Marvin Green (So.); Alex Brune (Jr.). Girls, Andrea Garcia (So.); Regina Nelson (Sr.); Nichole Poirier (Sr.); Kelley Terry (So.)

Outlook: Hashagen's boys squad has doubled in numbers and features impressive relay units.

 

CORONADO

Coach: Boys, Brook Brayman. Girls, Brenda Tomtan-Brayman

Top swimmers: Boys, Martin Vanis (Sr.); Robbie Falchi (Sr.); Evan Byrd (So.); Dan Harrison (Jr.); Matt Senef (Jr.). Girls, Kendal Nisson (Sr.); Jill Occhiuto (Sr.); Christine Smith (Sr.); Taylor Fenello (Sr.); Tatum Gormley (Jr.); Alix Mertel (So.)

Outlook: Tomtan-Brayman expects her state champion team to pull together well but doesn't anticipate a repeat. The girls squad lost five seniors but has capable replacements.

 

DEL SOL

Coach: Lisa Magnusson

Top swimmers: Boys, Carl Estin (So.); Chris Beil (Sr.). Girls, Sasha Zaro (Jr.); Bryanna Chavez (Jr.); Alexis Todd (So.); Lacy Dodd (Jr.); Caitlin Conrad (Jr.); Heloise Vandenbroelke (Sr.); Elin Warren (So.)

Outlook: A talented junior class will lead the Dragons after several strong, experienced swimmers graduated after last season.

 

DESERT PINES

Coach: Barton Pickens

Top swimmers: Boys, Elmer Lopez (Sr.); Kevin Fletcher (Sr.). Girls, Jhereyan Lagmay (Jr.); Morgan Johnson (Jr.)

Outlook: Pickens said his teams are rebuilding, with several inexperienced swimmers.

 

ELDORADO

Top swimmers: Boys, Tanner Grossman (Sr.); Tyler Peck (Sr.); Michaelangelo Bonsignore (Sr.); Phillip Weller (Sr.); Manuel Artiga (Sr.); Colt Thomas (Jr.). Girls, Melissa Petersen (Sr.); Kaylee Ficklin (Jr.); Brionne Mousseau (Jr.); Marissa Mousseau (So.); Ashley Lugo (Fr.)

Outlook: While the boys team appears set with a solid senior lineup, the girls will feature a younger look.

 

FOOTHILL

Coach: Keira Walland

Top swimmers: Boys, Robert Michaelson (Sr.); Zachary Stone (So.); Drew Richert (Jr.); Jeffrey Johnson (Jr.); Michael Sberna (Sr.); Thomas Burns (Jr.). Girls, Kathryn Snow (Sr.); Edith Field (Jr.); Victoria Senn (So.); Jennifer Schulte (So.)

Outlook: The Falcons return a senior-laden team that includes 22 returnees. Field finished second in state in diving, and Michaelson placed third in regionals in the 100-yard freestyle and second in 50-yard freestyle.

 

GREEN VALLEY

Coach: Bob Swift

Top swimmers: Boys, Ronnie Evans (Sr.); Adam Peers (Sr.); Ryan Chatwin (Sr.); Blake Bitton (Sr.); Clayton Smith (Jr.); Sean Jefferson (Jr.). Girls, Hillary Brown (Sr.); Nikki Berriman (Sr.); Devin Dorough (Jr.); Emily Martin (Jr.)

Outlook: The Gators will rely on an impressive senior class, including Chatwin (a former state diving champion) and Evans.

 

LAS VEGAS

Coach: Boys, Mike Harris. Girls, Rachel Moss

Top swimmers: Boys, Juancarlos Lopez (Sr.); Caleb Cline (So.); Matthew Blanchard (Jr.). Girls, Anja Crawford (Jr.); Kelly Radich (So.); Lea Thomas (So.)

Outlook: Harris said that although his Wildcats lack depth, they should be good enough to send a few swimmers to state. On the girls side, Crawford is a returning star.

 

LIBERTY

Coach: Colin Sully

Top swimmers: Boys, Ilya Gusol (Fr.). Girls, Noelle Wheatley (Jr.); Katie Rada (Jr.)

Outlook: Sully's main goal for the team is to get more swimmers competing in the sport year-round.

 

RANCHO

Coach: Jason Makepeace

Top swimmers: Boys, Sione Pulotu (Sr.); Wernher Deem (Fr.). Girls, Nia Born-Grissom (Jr.)

Outlook: The Rams have good numbers, and Makepeace said he expects Puloto to be the region's best in the backstroke and possible a state champion.

 

SILVERADO

Coach: John Cress

Top swimmers: Boys, David Batin (Sr.); Greg Pelletier (So.); Brandon Stitt (Fr.); Cameron Rand (Fr.); Joseph Hensel (Fr.). Girls, Taylor Albers (Sr.); Addie Oswald (Jr.)

Outlook: The Sky Hawks are looking to defend their regional girls title with state 500-yard freestyle champion Addie Oswald returning. Pelletier will lead a young boys squad.

 

TECH

Coach: Kim Lighty

Top swimmers: Boys, Johnny Funk

Outlook: Funk placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke at state last season.

 

VALLEY

Coach: Tristen Schalyo

Top swimmers: Boys, Alex Blomquist (Fr.); Joshua Tomashek (Sr.); Hans Chui (Sr.); Zachary Harris (So.). Girls, Marie Brown (Jr.); Becky Davey (Sr.); Emilie-Ariel Letourneau (Sr.); Julia Moran (Jr.); Kersey Wahlquist (Jr.)

Outlook: The Vikings were on the brink of qualifying for state last season with an improved boys squad. The teams have high hopes with more numbers and talent in the girls relay teams and in the boys backstroke with Harris.

ARBOR VIEW

Coach: Boys, Chris Meservey. Girls, Dana Ziegler

Top swimmers: Boys, Brian Martinez (So.); Josiah Stratton (Sr.); Jarrod Gifford (Sr.). Girls, Jordan Steinberg (Jr.); Dagne Vargas (Fr.); Antures Vargas (So.)

Outlook: With diving for the first time and the swim program in its third season, the team is on an upswing. Martinez returns as a state finalist in freestyle.

 

BISHOP GORMAN

Coach: Ron Aitken

Top swimmers: Boys, Mitchell Antisdale (Fr.); Ryan Brigman (Jr.); Alex Kulwin (So.); Patrick O'Rourke (Jr.); Adrian Pawlowski (So.); Ivan Sergeyezski (Fr.); Ryan Shovlin (Jr.). Girls, Erica Antisdale (Sr.); Erinn Bagley (Jr.); Anna Boyle (Fr.); Taylor Brigman (So.); Ciera Cortney (So.); Clare Finley (Fr.); Destine Jones (Sr.); Madison Martinet (Sr.) Shawn Sinclair (So.)

Outlook: The Gaels are loaded with young talent, and Aitken expects both his teams to improve on the regional and state levels. The boys stand the better shot at improving on an 18th-place finish at state.

Outlook: The Bengals have juniors on both sides who showed tremendous improvement last season.

 

CENTENNIAL

Top swimmers: Boys, Christian Moody (Jr.); Chris Bender (Jr.); Taylor Graham (Jr.). Girls, Lauren Moody (Sr.); Kristen Farbridge Currie (Jr.); Natalie Lipowitz (So.); Lauren Comeau (Jr.)

Outlook: A veteran team includes 10 regional girls qualifiers, with Farbridge-Currie placing third in state in the 500-yard freestyle.

 

CHEYENNE

Coach: Tom Garcia

Top swimmers: Boys, Justin Buhl (Sr.); Girls, Teri Haennelt (Sr.)

Outlook: The Desert Shields must overcome low numbers across the board, with Buhl and Haennelt leading the way.

 

CIMARRON-MEMORIAL

Outlook: Several regional qualifiers lead the Trailblazers, including four returning sophomores. Several high scorers for the boys side are gone, but the team has replacements.

Outlook: The Rattlers have a small squad, but Perkins is pleased at his team's improvement.

 

PALO VERDE

Outlook: The Panthers are hunting for their eighth straight boys regional championship, while the girls team is in the running to repeat as regional champion.

 

SHADOW RIDGE

Outlook: Strong relay teams on both sides should advance deep into regionals.

SIERRA VISTA

Outlook: The Lions return three legs of a 400-yard freestyle relay team that set a regional record. Twelve school records were set last season.

Outlook: Politi said his team should place high in the Sunset Region with the addition of many new swimmers and subtraction of only two seniors.

Outlook: With higher numbers and solid senior leadership, the Warriors will be much improved.
