Cold-shooting Valley falls in title game

After fighting their way to the final of the Las Vegas Prep Championship, the Valley Vikings shot themselves out of the title game at Las Vegas High School.

Valley hit 25 percent from the field Saturday in losing 47-37 to Pleasure Ridge Park of Louisville, Ky.

The Vikings shot 4-for-21 from 3-point range and struggled at the free-throw line, making 4 of 16.

The Panthers shot 42 percent from the field.

"We didn't shoot the ball very well tonight. Usually we can compensate for that with our rebounding," Valley coach Brian Farnsworth said. "That team is about as physical a team as we've played all year, and they outrebounded us pretty big in the first half."

The key stretch came early in the first half. After David Michaels grabbed a steal and went in for a layup to give Valley a 7-6 lead, Pleasure Ridge Park went on an 18-3 run to seize control, 24-10, with 4:40 left in the first half.

Allen Murray and Adam Delph each scored six points to power the Panthers' run. Meanwhile, the Vikings went cold, hitting one field goal in seven minutes.

Delph, named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, led all scorers with 21 points. Murray scored 10.

Delph's layup with 8:45 remaining in the second half gave the Panthers their largest lead, 41-23. Valley battled back with a 9-2 run to trim the lead to 11, but Delph scored on back-to-back possessions to end the rally.

"That was a really good team we played tonight, and they deserved to win the game," Farnsworth said. "But this team is as full of ultimate team players as I have ever coached, and no one has given us much of a chance this year. Making it to the championship here gives us something to build on for our tournament next week."
