Collins-Ragland eke out Baja 500 victory

Southern Nevadans won the top two titles in Saturday's SCORE Baja 500 that started and finished in Esenada, Mexcio.

Brian Collins of Las Vegas teamed with co-driver Larry Ragland of Cave Creek, Ariz., to win the overall title in the 424-mile race along the Baja California peninsula in their Chevrolet SCORE Trophy-Truck.

B.J. Richardson of Las Vegas drove solo to win the Class 1 title and finished 10th overall to maintain his season points leads in overall and Class 1 standings.

Collins drove the first 155 miles and Ragland finished the race in a combined time of 9 hours, 10 minutes, 58 seconds at an average speed of 46.20 mph.

NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Robby Gordon finished second overall, 3 minutes, 57 seconds behind the Collins-Ragland team.

B.J. Baldwin, also of Las Vegas, rolled his Chevy Silverado five miles from the finish line but got it uprighted and finished third overall.

Nine of the top four-wheel finishers in the race were Trophy-Trucks.

It was Ash's second Super Late Models victory and first in a year.

"I'm glad to get that off my back," he said of the long spell between victories.

Ash finished 0.345 seconds ahead of Tom Lovelady, who was followed by Scott Gafforini, Jeff Connors and Travis Swalwell.

Other winners were: Charlie Wahl (IMCA Modifieds), Phil Goodwin (Chargers), Ed Hohman (Thunder Roadsters), Nick Parmelee (Legends) and Don Sargent (Bombers). In Bandoleros, Dylan Kwasniewski was first in Bandits and Jacob Bishop in Young Guns.
