Colvin shows good hands, makes push for Locomotives’ roster spot

It was a golden opportunity to make his case for a spot on the Locomotives' roster, and Cameron Colvin took advantage of it.

The former Oregon and San Francisco 49ers wide receiver ran good routes, showed an ability to separate from the defense and caught virtually everything thrown his way during the team's intrasquad scrimmage Friday in front of about 150 fans at Sam Boyd Stadium.

"I don't think anything is solidified until the (final) roster comes out," Colvin said. "There's no let up. I have to get back to work Monday."

Colvin has looked impressive throughout training camp. But with tackling being allowed for the first time, he didn't back down. He challenged the secondary, and even poorly thrown balls were potential grabs.

"It starts in the meeting room," Colvin said. "The veterans are on me every day, making sure I know my assignments, and they don't cut me any slack."

Coach Jim Fassel said Colvin is making a strong push to stay in Las Vegas.

"He's had a great camp," Fassel said. "He's making plays, which is what we're looking for."

Overall, there was good intensity on both sides of the ball. Chase Clement is easily the team's top quarterback, and he looked confident and in control in running the offense and delivering the ball to Colvin and the other receivers.

Defensively, rookie defensive tackle Lawrence Wilson, linebacker Kris Griffin and cornerback Marquis Floyd were active, getting to the ball carrier and making plays.

With cuts coming next week from 70 to 51, Fassel and his staff will have some tough decisions.

"It went about as I expected," Fassel said. "It was important for us to tackle, and I liked our intensity.

"Nobody got cut or made the team based on what happened (Friday). But this is different from practice. It's a scrimmage, and you tend to weigh things a little more from what you see in a setting like this."
