Conway-Wilson ignites Agassi girls past The Meadows

Azaria Conway-Wilson was searching for one shot to ignite her game Saturday.

With her team facing a must-win situation, the Agassi Prep freshman wanted nothing more than to give her squad an opportunity at a playoff berth.

In the second half, the forward got her chance and didn’t miss.

Conway-Wilson scored 10 of her 15 points in the second half to send the visiting Stars past The Meadows 51-41 in the Division III Southern League regular-season finale.

“It feels great,” Conway-Wilson said. “This is amazing, because we’re making history (going for a playoff berth for the first time). It means a lot to me and to my team.”

Agassi Prep (9-10, 7-7) and The Meadows (13-9, 7-7) finished tied for fourth in the Southern League and will meet in a play-in game to determine the league’s final playoff spot. The date and site of the game will be determined Monday.

“We thrive under pressure,” Stars coach Kevin Moran said. “We’ve been under pressure since the year began. We have been all about being a family all year long. Our motto is: ‘We’re all we got.’ ”

What Agassi Prep had was the duo of Conway-Wilson and Javoulaee Green, who controlled the paint for most of the second half.

Green scored nine of her 13 points in the fourth quarter and had eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

“They got focused and started making their shots,” Moran said. “It just went picture-perfect. It was do-or-die, and they played that way.”

Searching for a spark after shooting 26.6 percent (8-for-30) in the first half, the Stars opened the third quarter on a 10-3 run. Agassi Prep forced 11 turnovers in the period while holding the Mustangs to five points.

Green’s basket with about six minutes to play pushed the Stars to their biggest lead, 40-26, but The Meadows cut the deficit to 47-41 with 1:31 remaining.

Conway-Wilson sank four consecutive free throws in the final 38 seconds to pad the victory.

Casey Barber paced the Mustangs with 11 points and six rebounds.
