Coronado girls team repeats as champions

Coronado's girls swimming and diving team made it two in a row, capturing the Class 4A state title for the second straight year Saturday at Lombardi Recreation Center in Reno.

The Cougars finished with 97 points, 18 ahead of second-place Reno. McQueen was third at 55, followed by Sierra Vista (44) and Galena (44).

Reno captured the boys title with 110 points, easily outdistancing second-place Palo Verde (66).

The Cougars won three girls events and had seven other top-four finishes.

Coronado took two of the three relays. Rachell McClain, Tatum Gormley, Katie Black and Kendal Nisson won the 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute, 51.81 seconds.

Nisson, McClain, Black and Mikaela Jordan won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:42.27.

Black also won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.44. She was third in the 100 butterfly.

Jordyn Lauten and Shelby Green placed second and fourth in diving for the Cougars. McClain was second in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 200 individual medley, and Gormley was third in the 100 breaststroke.

Southern Nevadans captured three other girls individual titles. Boulder City's Alexis Grothe won the 50 freestyle (23.84), Silverado's Addie Oswald was first in the 500 freestyle (5:11.35), and Bishop Gorman's Ciera Courtny captured the diving title (417.45 points).

Grothe also placed second in the 100 butterfly, and Oswald was second in the 200 individual medley.

In the boys meet, Reno's Boomer Roepke won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, and the Huskies finished with wins in seven events.

Locally, Coronado's Martin Vanis was the standout, winning the 100 freestyle (48.4) and 200 freestyle (1:44.68).

Durango's Corban Fleming won the 100 breaststroke (57.91), Centennial's James Butler won the 100 backstroke (53.04), and Boulder City's team of Camron Walker, Matt Brooks, Michael Satterlee and Zane Grothe won the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.13).
