Cougars roll past Rams; UNLV showdown next

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Lee Cummard scored 22 points and Trent Plaisted 21, and Brigham Young won its seventh in a row, beating Colorado State 79-65 on Wednesday night.

The Rams (6-18, 0-10 Mountain West Conference) have lost 11 in a row, their longest skid since dropping 13 in a row in the 1949-50 season.

With the win, BYU (19-5, 8-1) sets up a Mountain West showdown with UNLV (19-5, 8-2) on Saturday in Provo, Utah. The Rebels beat BYU 70-41 on Jan. 15, but the Cougars have won 43 in a row at home, the second-longest active streak in the nation.

"We got embarrassed against them," Cummard said. "They did whatever they wanted. Now, it's time to show them the real Cougars."

Stuart Creason scored a team-high 24 points for Colorado State, one shy of his career high.

Durango High School product Andre McFarland added 15 points for the Rams, but Marcus Walker, the conference's leading scorer, was held to seven points on 2-for-18 shooting. Walker was averaging 18.5 points.

• New Mexico 73, San Diego State 63 -- At San Diego, J.R. Giddens scored 22 points to lead the Lobos (19-6, 6-4 MWC) to a victory over the Aztecs (16-8, 6-4).

New Mexico made 52 percent of its shots, including 10-for-18 from 3-point range, and never trailed.

The Lobos responded with a 10-0 run after San Diego State pulled within 39-35 less than two minutes into the second half. They never led by fewer than eight points after that scoring spurt.

Cheyenne High School product Lorrenzo Wade scored 21 points for the Aztecs.

• Wyoming 72, Texas Christian 54 -- At Laramie, Wyo., Brandon Ewing scored 20 points and Brad Jones 19 to help the Cowboys (10-13, 3-7 MWC) rout the Horned Frogs (12-11, 4-6).

Mikhail Linskens added 14 points on 6-for-6 shooting

TCU pulled within 54-43 with an 8-0 run midway through the second half, but Ewing and Jones combined for 10 of the game's next 17 points to extend Wyoming's lead to 68-46. The Cowboys never led by fewer than 18 points the rest of the way.
