Cougars roll to victory

Coronado's baseball team entered spring break hoping to continue to ride the momentum of a five-game win streak.

Mission accomplished.

The Cougars pounded out 10 hits on the way to an 11-1 win over Coquitlam (Canada) at Sierra Vista in the Blazer Sportco Spring Bash.

"We're just trying to keep staying on a roll," Coronado coach Dave Padilla said. "We come into a game and we just want to bang balls all around the park. That's what we're trying to take out of this."

The Cougars scored a run on an error in the first, then began their offensive onslaught with Taylor Giordano's two-run homer in the third.

Coronado had seven runs in the fourth, keyed by RBI singles by Giordano and Ryan Donahue.

"My four hitter came through big time for us today with the home run, and then he backed it up with an RBI single a bit later," Padilla said of Giordano.

"He started swinging it real good when we started conference play, and it's just been rolling now. He hasn't missed much."

Miles Bice and Zane Korth each added two hits for Coronado (6-0-2).

"We're swinging the bat really well, and our pitching, which has been a pleasant surprise, has kept us in a lot of games," Padilla said. "That was a real question mark going into the year, but everyone we've thrown out there have all stepped up."

Senior right-hander Trenton Gibson pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts to get the win against the Reds, a club team in the B.C. Premier Baseball League, which uses wooden bats.

"Trenton just threw the ball over the middle of the plate and said, 'Here it is. Hit it,' " Padilla said. "He was facing a team with wood bats today, which makes it a little easier for us, because now they've got to generate even more pop. But they put the ball in play and we made the plays behind him. We were really happy with his performance today."
