Cougars take advantage of Rams’ mistakes in win

PROVO, Utah -- Brigham Young scored off enough of Colorado State's mistakes early that it didn't matter much when the 19th-ranked Cougars started making some gaffes of their own.

The Cougars converted two interceptions and a blocked punt into touchdowns in the first quarter, then held on in the second half for a 42-23 victory over the Rams on Saturday.

One week after being blown out at home by Florida State, BYU survived despite some sloppy moments.

"I thought it was a good win," said Max Hall, who passed for two TDs and ran for another. "We had some ups and some downs, but for the most part I thought the guys played hard."

Hall finished 18 of 29 for 241 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions, and Harvey Unga ran for three touchdowns and became the Cougars' first 100-yard rusher with 113 yards on 22 carries.

BYU (3-1, 1-0 Mountain West) had to overcome 10 penalties and a surge by the Rams (3-1, 0-1) in the second half.

Grant Stucker completed 30 of 50 passes for 372 yards and two touchdowns for the Rams, who lost their sixth straight to the Cougars.

• No. 15 Texas Christian 14, Clemson 10 -- At Clemson, S.C., the Horned Frogs (3-0) showed off their stellar defense and bolstered their BCS buster credentials with a victory over the Tigers (2-2).

Andy Dalton threw two touchdown passes and TCU held Clemson to 117 yards in the second half to take control.

• Utah 30, Louisville 14 -- At Salt Lake City, Terrance Cain threw for two touchdowns and Eddie Wide ran for 129 yards to help the Utes (3-1) cruise past the Cardinals (1-2).

Cain completed his first eight passes and Utah scored two touchdowns 18 seconds apart to take control early and help get going again after a 31-24 loss at Oregon last week that ended the nation's longest active winning streak.

• Air Force 26, San Diego State 14 -- At Air Force Academy, Colo., Reggie Rembert returned a fumble 47 yards for a score, the first of Air Force's two defensive touchdowns, and Erik Soderberg tied a school record with four field goals, lifting the Falcons (3-1, 2-0) over the Aztecs (1-3, 0-1).

Air Force has won three straight over San Diego State.

• New Mexico State 20, New Mexico 17 -- At Albuquerque, N.M., Jeff Fleming hit Marcus Anderson with a 4-yard touchdown pass with 39 seconds left to rally the Aggies (2-2) past the Lobos (0-4).

The win for New Mexico State in the teams' 100th meeting breaks a six-game losing streak to New Mexico.
