Driskel to start at QB for Florida

After seven months of practice and workouts, four weeks of camp and one game, No. 23 Florida has decided on a starting quarterback.

It could be settled for the entire season, too.

Coach Will Muschamp said Monday that Jeff Driskel will start Saturday's Southeastern Conference opener at Texas A&M, adding that "it's good to move forward with naming one guy and go with it."

Muschamp picked Driskel over fellow sophomore Jacoby Brissett partly because of Driskel's mobility.

"Just feel like Jeff with his legs gives us some different variables in our offense that can help us as we move forward," Muschamp said. "So it'll be Jeff's game to play. I told Jeff, 'I don't want you looking over your shoulder, but you need to play well.' "

Driskel completed 10 of 16 passes for 114 yards in Saturday's season opener against Bowling Green, including a 50-yard touchdown pass to Frankie Hammond that helped seal the 27-14 victory.

Brissett started the opener but played just 11 snaps. He completed 3 of 5 passes for 31 yards. Driskel took 52 snaps and played the entire second half. Nonetheless, Muschamp said after the game that he hadn't chosen a starter.

Two days later, Muschamp gave both quarterbacks the news.

The Gators will be without long snapper Drew Ferris against Texas A&M. Ferris broke his collarbone in the season opener against Bowling Green.

■ NEBRASKA - Coach Bo Pelini said injured running back Rex Burkhead is questionable for Saturday's game at UCLA.

Pelini said an MRI examination confirmed Burkhead mildly sprained a ligament in his left knee early in the opening win against Southern Mississippi.

Pelini said he expects no drop-off if Burkhead can't play. Backups Ameer Abdullah, Braylon Heard and Imani Cross combined for 177 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries in the 49-20 win over Southern Miss. Abdullah also caught an 11-yard touchdown pass for the 17th-ranked Cornhuskers (1-0).

■ MISSOURI - Linebacker Will Ebner and guard Jack Meiners are questionable with injuries for the Tigers' SEC opener against No. 6 Georgia on Saturday.

Ebner has a stinger from the opening win over Southeastern Louisiana. Coach Gary Pinkel said after the game that he hoped to get Ebner back. Meiners, a senior who started seven games last year, missed the opener with a knee injury.

■ LOUISIANA STATE - Tyrann Mathieu's adoptive father said the former Tigers star plans to enroll in classes at LSU, even though he cannot play football there this season. Tyrone Mathieu told WVUE-TV in New Orleans that his son plans to enroll at the Baton Rouge campus Tuesday, the deadline for the fall semester.

The football star known as the "Honey Badger" has been working out personal problems with former NBA coach and player John Lucas in Houston. Lucas battled drug and alcohol problems during his career and now counsels others.

■ FLORIDA STATE - Senior defensive end Brandon Jenkins will miss the rest of the season after injuring his left foot in the Seminoles' 69-3 season-opening win over Murray State.

Florida State said an MRI examination revealed a Lisfranc injury. Jenkins had 21½ sacks the past two seasons.
