Ex-Rebel Campbell three back

With a chance to land near the top of the leaderboard, former UNLV star Chad Campbell failed to take full advantage of ideal conditions Thursday at TPC Summerlin.

Campbell shot 7-under-par 65 in the first round of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open to trail co-leaders Zach Johnson and Marc Turnesa by three shots.

Campbell's number would look pretty good most days on the PGA Tour, but this week he figures "the conditions are such that it could take 25 under to win it."

"I was playing pretty solid, then I had that bogey at 8. But I came back and had an eagle at 9. All in all, it was a good round," said Campbell, a member of the winning U.S. Ryder Cup team last month.

Campbell, who began play at No. 10, also made eagle at the par-4 15th to offset the bogey he took at his second hole, the par-4 No. 11.

While Campbell got off to a solid start, it was a mixed bag for the other UNLV alumni in the tournament.

Ryan Moore shot 66. Charley Hoffman came in at 67 despite a double bogey on the par-3 14th. Mike Ruiz played a strong back nine with three birdies in his final four holes for a 67. Chris Riley played steady throughout and carded a 70.

• NOTES -- Turnesa's 10-under 62 was three shots better than his previous best round on the PGA Tour. He has shot 65 twice, both this season: in the third round of the Wyndham Championship and the first round of the Viking Classic. ... The 62s shot by Turnesa and Johnson were one stroke off the TPC Summerlin course record set by Davis Love III in 2001. ... Of the 132 players who started Thursday, only 16 failed to break par.
