Ex-UNLV standout Holmes signs with WNBA’s Comets

Sequoia Holmes, a former UNLV and Mojave High School standout, has signed a free-agent contract with the Houston Comets of the WNBA.

"I'm just excited and ready to go and work hard and make things happen for myself," Holmes said Tuesday. "I've been dreaming about that for a long time."

Holmes is one of 17 players who will take part in training camp, which opens Sunday. Fifteen will make the team.

The 6-foot-1-inch Holmes will try to make the roster at small forward but also could catch on at shooting guard.

Houston could be the right fit because it will play to Holmes' strengths by becoming a running team. The Comets used the draft to upgrade their athleticism, picking up 5-8 guard Matee Ajavon of Rutgers and 5-3 guard Erica White of Louisiana State in the first two rounds.

"Just to have the opportunity to get in the door is a big part of it, and usually the talent speaks for itself," Holmes said.

She was named first-team All-Mountain West Conference after averaging 18.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.2 steals during the regular season.
