Fishing Report, 10/20/11
■ LAKE MEAD -- Striped bass are biting in the upper and lower basins. Anglers still are finding a few boils, mostly in the early morning. Fish are hitting throughout the day, but the best action is taking place during the evening and nighttime hours. The Vegas Wash area remains productive for small fish in the 2-pound range, though some fish are reaching 6 pounds. Live shad, anchovies and shad imitations are catching the fish. Anglers also are catching largemouth and smallmouth bass.
■ LAKE MOHAVE -- Anglers still are catching double-digit striped bass in the early morning at Willow Beach, with some fish pushing past the 20-pound mark. A.C. Plugs, Rago baits and other swim baits are catching the fish. Trout anglers are finding success following weekly fish plants by the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery. Panther Martins, Super Dupers, Little Jakes and Kastmasters will catch the fish, as will such traditional baits as night crawlers, salmon eggs and PowerBait. Striper fishing has picked up in the midlake area, with one catch coming in at 13 pounds. Catfish also are being caught in this area.
■ LAUGHLIN -- The Willow Beach hatchery completed its first rainbow trout plant of the year along this stretch of the Colorado River early last week. PowerBait and a variety of small lures and spinners will catch the fish.
■ URBAN PONDS -- Catfish action picked up following the Oct. 12 fish plant by the Nevada Department of Wildlife. That was the last catfish plant of the year. Water temperatures will determine the start date for the agency's trout-stocking efforts.
■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- The rainbow trout bite has warmed up as the water temperature and bass action has cooled. The NDOW stocked rainbows at Haymeadow Reservoir last week, so the bigger fish are coming from Cold Springs. Weedy conditions are beginning to ease, but that means anglers might have to fish around floating debris.
■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- Green PowerBait, night crawlers and mini-marshmallows are catching rainbow trout at this Lincoln County reservoir. Anglers also have caught a few German browns.
■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- Anglers have found good action for rainbow trout, largemouth bass and crappie. The panfish are hitting white and pink jigs fished about 4 feet below a bobber.
