FISHING REPORT

* LAKE MEAD -- Anglers who took advantage of the season's last trout plant found success in the evening hours. Stripers are taking bait in the Vegas Bay arm, especially when anglers chum them up. Several fish in the 4- to 17-pound class were caught.

Fishing in the Hemenway area continues to be slow, though some anglers have picked up fish near the tires at Las Vegas Boat Harbor.

Largemouth bass fishermen did well during a weekend tournament.

* LAKE MOHAVE -- The National Park Service announced Cottonwood Cove would be closed for an undetermined period because of a failure in the potable water system. In the meantime, boaters will need to launch out of Willow Beach or Katherine Landing.

Fishing has improved for shore and boat anglers. Anglers are reeling in 2- to 3-pound stripers with crank baits and anchovies fished in 10 to 40 feet of water. Largemouth bass and the occasional smalley also are being caught. The winners of a weekend tournament landed five fish that totaled more than 20 pounds. The tournament's big fish weighed nearly 6 pounds.

At Willow Beach, trout anglers have been catching fish along the shoreline with rainbow-colored PowerBait.

* LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS -- Trout fishing will slow as daytime temperatures rise. Try PowerBait, PowerEggs and small spinners or flies.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife will begin stocking catfish next week and will continue through the summer.

* LAUGHLIN -- Personnel from the Willow Beach hatchery stocked trout in the Colorado River last week. The plant was the last of the spring.

Anglers have been catching fish on PowerBait and spinners. Striped bass have hit anchovies near Harrah's.

* EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- The ice is melting, and the lake soon should be ice-free. Fishing will be slow until water temperatures reach the mid- to upper 40s. Fish the open water along the shoreline, especially where the ice and open water meet. Worms and PowerBait probably will work best.

Once the water warms up, try small spinners such as a Mepp's or Panther Martin.

* ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- One family reportedly caught several crappie in the past week. Look for crappie in the narrows and along structures. The NDOW planted about 6,500 9-inch rainbow trout last week. PowerBait, PowerEggs or a combination of worms and mini-marshmallows should fool the fish.

* KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- The ice is beginning to clear on the area's reservoirs. Fishing should continue to improve.

* COMINS LAKE -- The reservoir soon should be ice-free. Trout anglers will find fishing slow, but the fish will be on the large side. Pike fishing will be good immediately. Go prepared with large plugs, and fish the edges of the weed beds.
