FISHING REPORT
June 5, 2008 - 9:00 pm
* LAKE MEAD -- Anglers are finding shad in the Overton Arm. Shore anglers and boaters are catching small striped bass and catfish. Stripers are hitting both shad and hardware. One boater said he caught stripers near Stewart's Point. Fishing has been slow along the beaches near Hemenway, but anglers are catching striped bass there and in the Vegas Bay arm. Anglers are also catching largemouth bass.
* LAKE MOHAVE -- Cottonwood Cove action is being described as good to very good. The point north of the marina is providing good action for striped bass and catfish at night and early morning. Boat anglers are still finding most success trolling in 20 to 80 feet of water at the mouth of coves. Top-water and shallow-diving lures are taking largemouth bass in water less than 20 feet deep.
PowerBait, PowerWorms and flies have been catching rainbow trout during the morning hours at Willow Beach. Fishing from shore has been good. One boater landed a 20-inch, 21/2-pound rainbow while fishing for largemouth bass at Mile 44. The fish took a rubber worm. Striper fishing has been slow.
* LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS -- The Nevada Department of Wildlife last stocked catfish in the five urban ponds in mid-May. The date of the next catfish plant has not been released. The ponds still hold some trout that are holdovers from winter stocking, and both catfish and bluegill should provide good action through the hot summer months.
* EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- Fishing is good, with many anglers taking limits of rainbow trout. PowerBait and worms are the preferred choice in baits, though small spinners or spoons are producing bites. An aeration pump that circulates oxygen in the reservoir is being replaced.
* ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- As temperatures rise, trout anglers should focus on the deep water near the dam or in areas where the fish can spend time in the shade or near structure. Mini-marshmallows fished with a worm can be productive.
* KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- Angler use is down, but the action is still good for rainbow trout in the 14- to 16-inch range. Largemouth bass fishing has picked up and should continue to improve with the warmer weather.
* ELY AREA -- Word is that an 8-pound largemouth bass was caught in Comins Lake east of Ely. The fish reportedly bore scars left behind by the northern pike.
Fishing has been good at Illipah, with most anglers using worms, spinners or minnow-type lures. The average fish is 10 to 14 inches, with an occasional trout pushing 16 inches. Cave Lake is producing trout in the neighborhood of 10 to 12 inches. The fish are taking small spinners, worms and PowerBait.
