FISHING REPORT
• LAKE MEAD -- When they can net them, anglers are using live shad to catch striped bass in the Vegas Wash area. Cut bait is also working. Catfish have taken stink baits or night crawlers. Anglers have found largemouth and smallmouth bass in relatively shallow water near structure. Drop shot rigs and crankbaits proved successful during a recent tournament.
• LAKE MOHAVE -- Angler success improved after windy conditions calmed late last week. Still fishing and trolling techniques have taken striped bass, though trolling has proven most productive. Stripers are averaging from 11/2 to 4 pounds. Still fishing with prepared baits is taking catfish to 4 pounds.
Bass anglers are finding bucket mouths in the coves north of Cottonwood Cove. At Willow Beach, anglers are catching trout south of the picnic area. Night crawlers, flies, lures and PowerBait are catching fish. Boating anglers are seeing improved action for striped bass, but the bite is still sluggish. Anglers have had success with anchovies and swimbaits.
• URBAN PONDS -- Anglers have taken a few rising trout on dry flies at Floyd Lamb Park and Veterans Memorial Park. Bluegill are active and will take small flies, small spinners and meal worms suspended below a bobber. Bread rolled into a ball will get bites. Largemouth bass also are an option at Floyd Lamb or Sunset Park. The Nevada Department of Wildlife planted catfish at Sunset and Veterans Memorial parks last week. This week, the department put whisker fish in Lorenzi, Floyd Lamb and Mesquite's Hafen Park.
• EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- Stocked rainbows are hitting PowerBait, Super Dupers and silver spoons. Also, try floating a worm with a mini marshmallow. Fishing activity is high and probably will remain so over the holiday weekend.
• ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- NDOW planted nearly 7,000 rainbow trout in late April. That should result in good fishing if the weather is good. Largemouth bass and crappie should round out the fishing experience.
• KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- Expect company if you head to Kirch for the extended weekend. With camping facilities limited, be mindful of others and courteous with ATVs. If winds lay down, anglers should find good fishing for rainbow trout and largemouth bass. Olive Woolly Buggers, Cave Lake Specials or Prince Nymphs are usually a good fly choice. PowerBait and worms also will catch trout, but make sure to keep the bait above the weeds.
• ELY AREA -- Anglers are catching stocked rainbows and brown trout at Cave Lake. The lake and camping facilities have been busy. This weekend undoubtedly will be busier. Two anglers caught a handful of pike while casting plugs at Comins Lake.
