FISHING REPORT
• LAKE MEAD -- Wind and rain slowed activity over the holiday weekend, but anglers found success for striped bass from the back of Vegas Wash to Boxcar Cove and near what's left of Sand Island. The fish are mostly small.
Nevada Department of Wildlife creel clerks have received reports that anglers are finding schools of small stripers in Black Canyon near the dam. Smallmouth bass are actively taking baits as well.
• LAKE MOHAVE -- Li'l Jakes, Kastmasters, spinners and PowerBait have caught stocked rainbows this past week at Willow Beach. Cool and cloudy weather conditions have produced excellent fishing, with many shore anglers taking home limits of trout. Boat anglers also have found success throwing 8-inch SPRO swimbaits near Jumbo Wash and mile 49.
The action remains fair to good for anglers fishing out of Cottonwood Cove. Boat anglers are catching striped bass by trolling in 20 to 80 feet of water just outside of coves. Shore anglers are catching fish in the mouths of coves near the marina.
• LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS -- For stocked catfish, try shrimp, stink bait or night crawlers fished on the bottom. The fish planted this month averaged 20 inches in length.
Bluegill have been active. Suspend your bait below a bobber and use a small hook. Most people make the mistake of using bait that is too large.
Anglers are catching a few trout and even a largemouth bass here and there.
• EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- Anglers are finding fair to good fishing for planter-size rainbow trout. PowerBait, worms and small hardware usually will catch fish. Fly anglers might want to try olive or brown Woolly Buggers.
• ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- Largemouth bass and stocked rainbows are options for anglers at this Lincoln County reservoir.
• KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- Largemouth bass are providing good action.
One angler reported that he and a partner had two 30-fish days. They were using spinner baits, but plastic worms were also catching fish.
The cold front that blew through last week will help prolong the trout bite. Weeds will grow as the water warms and will make fishing difficult for shore anglers. Use floating baits and long leaders to keep bait out of the weeds.
• ELY AREA -- Cave Lake is giving up planter rainbows and even German brown trout.
Illipah has been fishing well all spring and should continue to do so until warm summer temperatures shut things down.
