FISHING REPORT

LAKE MEAD -- Top-water action is heating up. Anglers have been taking fish in the areas near Sand Island, Government Wash and Boxcar Cove.

Shad have moved in along the Boulder Beach area, and this should improve fishing opportunities for shore fishermen.

Catfish have been taking bait near Vegas Wash, and anglers have been catching largemouth bass in the coves near Kingman Wash and around the Boulder Islands.

LAKE MOHAVE -- Recent thunderstorms have resulted in washed-out roads and debris-covered parking areas, but anglers have made their way to Willow Beach. Check conditions before going.

The trout bite has been sporadic with shore anglers finding success with a variety of baits, from plastic worms to spinners to PowerBait. Most fish are typical of the 12- to 13-inch planter variety, but one angler hauled in a 22-inch rainbow.

Boat fishermen have been doing well with PowerBait and Kastmasters. A 10-pound striped bass was taken on the new BBz-1 swimbait near the hatchery buoys. The Bomber Long A has been productive, as have anchovies for bait casters.

Anglers fishing out of Cottonwood have found moderate success, though the coves north of the marina have provided good action for boaters fishing for striped bass using anchovies in 15 to 60 feet of water. Carol Scott landed a 33-inch striper that tipped the scales at nearly 10 pounds.

LAUGHLIN -- For striped bass, try drift fishing with anchovies. Large plugs or swimbaits resembling rainbow trout can be effective. Fish the backwaters for largemouth bass and sunfish.

LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS -- Catfish will be stocked this week at the ponds in Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City, Hafen Park in Mesquite and Sunset, Lorenzi and Floyd Lamb parks.

Night crawlers, stink baits or small shrimp should take catfish.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- Warm water temperatures have rainbow trout holding in deeper, cooler water. Anglers still are taking fish, but the catch rate will remain slow into early September.

PowerBait and night crawlers probably are the best option.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- Anglers working the weed beds in front of the dam have been taking largemouth bass, trout and crappie.

PowerBait and mini-marshmallows have been effective on trout. For bass, try plastics or spinner baits and cast to the weeds.

KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- Weed growth has limited angling opportunities mostly for boat anglers, but water where shore anglers can cast for rainbow trout remains open.

Trout have been taking insects off the surface, so casting a fly-and-bubble setup could be productive. PowerBait fished on a leader long enough to keep the bait above the weeds also will produce fish.

Largemouth bass are active but holding in deep water during the heat of the day. Spinner baits have been taking the fish.
