FISHING REPORT
February 4, 2010 - 10:00 pm
• LAKE MEAD -- Fishing continues to be slow for anglers at Lake Mead, and that has the number of anglers down. Only a handful of anglers have been seen fishing in the Vegas Wash and Boulder Beach areas.
However, there are reports that large stripers are changing things up by hitting shad imitations more often than rainbow trout lures. Anglers also are seeing shad swimming along the shore.
• LAKE MOHAVE -- Fishing for trout at Willow Beach has been good, with high water levels holding fish near the shore. Trout are biting the usual PowerBait, PowerWorms, small lures and flies.
Cottonwood Cove continues to be slow, though some anglers have been catching catfish and stripers. With more inclement weather coming this weekend, fishing is expected to remain slow.
• URBAN PONDS -- Fishing was good at all local ponds after last week's trout plant. Fish continue to bite PowerBait, small lures and flies fished below the surface.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife will begin planting trout weekly at urban ponds through the end of March.
• KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- Ice is reported to be 8 inches thick on all reservoirs except Dacey, which has some open water.
Anglers are catching good sized carry-over trout on all reservoirs where ice is thick enough for fishing. Use caution on the ice. Though the roads have been cleared, four-wheel drive is recommended. Call the management area (775-283-0240) before visiting.
• EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- The ice averages 16 inches thick near the dock and dam, providing some good ice fishing for carry-over trout. Anglers are pulling brown trout, rainbow trout and tiger trout through the ice.
• ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- Ice is reported to be 7 inches thick, but anglers are advised to use caution. Water coming into the head of the reservoir from the stream can make the ice too thin to fish on.
