Fishing report, July 10, 2014

■ LAKE MEAD — The water level is holding at 1,082 feet, and the National Park Service is taking steps to ease boater difficulties at launch ramps. Boaters are encouraged to exercise caution as hazards can be exposed with lower water levels. Anglers hitting the water early are finding success. Many of those fishing through the Vegas Wash area are catching striped bass and finding plenty of shad for bait. Action has been good for largemouth and smallmouth bass, though smallies are outnumbering the largemouth bass. The fish are taking swim shad, spinner baits and worms fished on drop shot rigs.

■ LAKE MOHAVE — Action has been good for catfish. Work the backs of coves during the nighttime hours. Anchovies have been the bait of choice with hot dogs or stink baits working as well. Smallmouth bass are hanging out on rocky shelves in about 10 feet of water, and largemouth can be found just slightly deeper. Nightcrawlers are prime bait, with plastics or spinner baits also bringing in fish. Striper action has been spotty, though some have found success with top-water baits in the early morning hours.

■ LAUGHLIN — The action for striped bass remains steady. Most fish range from 1 to 3 pounds, but the occasional striper pushes the 10-pound mark. Drifting anchovies has been productive, and top-water lures have been working in the early-morning hours. Fishing has picked up for sunfish, and anglers are having success with pieces of nightcrawlers, mealworms and small jigs.

■ URBAN PONDS — Fishing conditions are typical for this time of year. Sunfish are taking mealworms and nightcrawlers in most of the ponds, while bass are hanging in the shadowy pools and undercuts along the shoreline at Floyd Lamb Park. Catfish were last stocked four weeks ago. Because of high temperatures, the Nevada Department of Wildlife has no plans to stock fish in July.

■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — Fishing for bass, trout and crappie was fair on Haymeadow and Cold Springs over the holiday weekend. Water temperatures are reaching 75 degrees during the day. At Adams-McGill, the action was fair for bass in the 9- to 12-inch range. Anglers also reeled in a few trout. Daytime fishing has been slow at Dacey, though there are reports of improved action in the evening and early morning hours.

■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Between monsoonal rains and heat, fishing has slowed and angler pressure has eased. Those who are fishing have found luck with a night crawler-salmon egg combo. Bass anglers have had the best success using nightcrawlers or jigs along the tule beds. Trout and bass are most active in the early-morning hours.

■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — The action was slower last week because of weather conditions that kept most people off the lake. Trout, crappie and bass continue to hit on nightcrawlers or small spinners.
