Fishing report, July 12
July 12, 2012 - 1:00 am
■ LAKE MEAD - Sporadic striper boils are forming during the early morning hours, but the fish seek deeper water as daytime temperatures rise. Anglers are catching striped bass and catfish from Vegas Wash to Boxcar Cove and along the beaches north of the Hemenway launch ramp. In the Overton Arm, fishing has been good for largemouth and smallmouth bass, and small striped bass. The water level has dropped to 1,115 feet, a loss of nearly 20 feet since February. Boaters should use caution and watch for submerged rocks and other changes in underwater structure.
■ LAKE MOHAVE - Windy conditions and warm temperatures have limited angling out of Cottonwood Cove, but action for striped bass is beginning to pick up. Anglers have found success for striped bass and catfish while fishing in coves with cut anchovies. Largemouth bass and smallmouth bass action is fair. Fishing is slow at Willow Beach, where daytime temperatures have reached 120 degrees.
■ LAUGHLIN - Anglers continue to catch rainbow trout while fishing night crawlers in the big bend area. Anglers are finding success for striped pass from Davis Camp south past Rotary Park on the Arizona side. The fish are hitting cut anchovies fished on the bottom and lures such as the Rat'l Trap.
■ URBAN PONDS - Anglers have found good fishing for largemouth bass at Floyd Lamb Park. The bluegill bite remains fair there and at Sunset and Veterans Memorial parks. Catfish action has slowed. Another catfish plant is scheduled for mid-August. The limit is three fish.
■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA - Anglers have found fair to good action for largemouth bass and crappie. Trout fishing is slow. Seasonal weed growth is starting to become an issue.
■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR - Trout action has slowed, but anglers are still catching rainbows and tiger trout. Many of the fish are in the 15-inch range. There has been little bass fishing activity. Trout in this reservoir generally bite well on flies, small spinners or lures, red worms and PowerBait. When seasonal weed growth becomes an issue, anglers do well with a mini-marshmallow-and-red worm combination.
■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR - The crappie bite has shut down, but largemouth bass are providing good action for anglers throwing spinner baits in bright colors: greens, yellows and reds. Trout action also has slowed, but anglers are catching a few fish in the 12-inch class. Seasonal weed growth is becoming an issue.
